GOOD DESERVES BETTER

In its relatively short history as a craft medium, polymer clay has established itself as one of the most versatile. Borrowing from the traditions of other media and also evolving on its own, the diversity of decorative pattern possibilities is undeniably vast.

There’s a lot of beautiful decorative polymer clay work out there, but I believe there’s not enough work that holds up as well-crafted and well-finished. What is it they say? Good from afar, but far from good? No matter how crisp the canework, how smooth the Skinner blend, how dynamic the mokume, how mesmerizing the mica shift… a closer look at a finished piece can all-too-often reveal something compromising: a crack, a bubble, a fingerprint, an unsealed seam, an unfinished edge, a neglected backside. All this is not for lack of will. It’s often because the fundamental basics of technique in form, fabrication, and finish have been overlooked and undertaught.

BETTER THAN THE REST

As magical as some of our favourite decorative techniques can seem in this always evolving medium, beautifully finished work doesn’t happen by magic. Seeing something through as a finely crafted piece requires knowledge and effort. But a beautifully crafted object is worth the effort.

In a medium that is so accessible, it’s not hard to be good. But good craftsmanship can make the difference between good and better, and better crafted, better finished work will make your work stand out.

Building Better Beads focuses on one approach that I've been using in my work for almost 20 years. The first bead in the slide show gallery here is one of the most recent examples. I built it during the debut of this course in June 2018, featuring a Cut-Outs & Composites veneer I'd made in Single Slice Mokume a couple of months earlier.

Scroll through the rest of the slides to see how a single set of skills can be applied to beads of all shapes and sizes…

BETTER LEADS TO BEST

By Building Better Beads, I promise, you’ll be building your skills, building your confidence, and building a better body of work… towards not just being a better artist, but the best artist you can be.

Here are some highlights from students who joined me for my first online course, Single Slice Mokume . . .

This course was just what I needed to get back into working in polymer clay. The online format is convenient and simple to use. The information shared is much much more than I ever imagined in a course like this.
— Corinne Flannery : USA
This was everything I had hoped for and more! I learned not just the specific techniques, but the thinking behind craftsmanship, patience, and care for the process.
— Julia Powell : USA
I am amazed by the brilliant teaching, the perfect execution, and the time and commitment of Dan and Tracy to make this on-line course feel like a live workshop, warming and full of space to learn.
— Inês Fonseca : Scotland
Thank you very much for making this course available to people like me who live very far away and have always wanted to be at one of your workshops. You gave me the chance to learn so much from you. It has been a great experience.
— Esther Ramiro : Spain
The online format allowed me to participate at a pace that accommodated real life intrusions. Every section was so thoughtfully prepared and presented, it was like having the teachers all to myself, even though I knew the classroom was world wide and full of other creative souls.
— JaNita Clairmont : USA
Adapting your classroom instructions to an online class was a huge success! Your step-by-step directions and videos were set up perfectly and I would not hesitate to recommend this class to everyone who works with polymer clay. Best class I’ve ever taken online by far!!!
— Vickie Siemon : USA
